Literature Text

It was a crisp autumn day as you and your golden retriever, Ralph, walked through your local park. You had been enjoying the afternoon stroll, taking in the sights. You stopped every now and then to check your phone or to clean up after your pet's mess. What you didn't expect to stop for was a man playing with his own canine companion. You escorted Ralph to a nearby bench to observe the scene from a distance.
The man was wearing a black zipper coat and dark blue jeans. You noticed a beige, worn out scarf fluttering in the chilly air behind him. The beige of the scarf was a very similar shade to the color of his hair. You squinted your eyes to try to notice any more physical features, but you finalized that you had to get closer.

"How am I get closer without seeming odd?" you asked Ralph. The dog just stared back at you blankly. His tongue hung out on an angle, and his breath was visible in the cool air as he panted. You were about to ask your unresponsive dog another question, but a shrill bark interrupted you. The dog of the mysterious man was barking at its owner held in his large hands. You decided that you would at least make small talk with the man if anything.

You barely noticed the crunch of deceased and fallen leaves as the man with the scarf got closer into view. At a closer distance you noticed how tall the man was compared to an average man you knew. You thought of a conversation starter as you began to approach him. You tried not to think of anything stupid to say, but you didn't over think it either. You came up with the perfect idea.
The little dog, which seemed to be a Jack Russell Terrier mix, noticed you and began to bark. Its barking got its owner's attention and caused him to turn around. The man's expression became worried when he noticed it was a person and their dog instead of just a passing leaf.

"I am very sorry, miss. Laika is usually very good around people and other dogs," His accented voice filled the air among the other voices of strangers. "Is there anything you wanted? My name is Ivan, by the way."

Ivan, you thought, definitely not a name you hear around here that much. You flashed a shy smile at Ivan and replied, trying your best not to falter.

"My name is _____. It's alright Ivan," you caught yourself staring at his eyes. They were an abnormal violet color. "I was just wondering, what kind of breed is your dog? She is very cute"

"Laika? Oh, she is a Mongrel, I believe. That is what the shelter told me at least," he began to adjust the scarf that caught your eye. "Hm, what about your dog? Is he a golden retriever perhaps? He is so well-behaved."

Your smile was still plastered on your face. You never knew a conversation about simple animals would be so interesting! "Yep, Ralph here is a golden retriever. Thanks. He usually isn't this patient, unless he's tired," You replied casually before checking your phone for the time. "Ugh, I have to be home soon. It was nice talking to you Ivan."

You readjusted Ralph's sturdy leash in your hand and began walking the opposite way. You were disappointed that you only talked about dogs with Ivan. Why couldn't you come with more interesting topics? I've got to work on coming up with interesting conversation starters.. You thought to yourself. Suddenly, your train of thought was interrupted by a familiar voice.

"Hey _____!", Ivan called out before you made your way onto the main path of the park. You turned around somewhat surprised. "I'm glad we had our little conversation that we had today. Maybe we can talk about something else over a cup of coffee some other time? How does that sound?"

Your upset expression immediately changed with the question. You walked, almost jogged, back over to the tall man and fumbled through your pocket for a pen. Once you finally found one, Ivan took an old receipt from his own pocket and handed it to you. You took the thin sheet of paper and scribbled your name and number onto it. Along with the number, you gave Ivan another smile of yours. You gave the slip back to him and he chuckled, slipping the paper into his large pocket. Your new friend, no longer a stranger, thanked you and turned and went off on his way. His little dog Laika following loyally at his heels.

You too began your way home. You were not even of out of the park yet when you received the first text.

'Hello _____. I'm pretty sure you know who this is :^)
kol'

You chuckled at your phone and immediately saved the number to your phone. You questioned the kol signature and began to reply to your new friend.
This day turned out more eventful than you thought it would.
